Donate to the Tamarac Interpretive Association (TIA)
The mission of the Tamarac Interpretive Association (TIA) is to facilitate activities and programs that interpret, protect and restore the natural and cultural resources of the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. A year round public and groups program is offered, more active in the summer and fall months, with activities, tours, nature hikes, and presentations and films at the visitor center. Last year, 59 Tamarac Interpretive Association volunteers worked 1752 hours on these activies and more. This website has been designed and it is maintained by volunteer time.
Among some notable TIA accomplishments this past year:
- Sponsored a bus for a fall visit for residents of a local senior care center
- Sponsored a Fall Open House in October
- Purchased a new spotting scope for the Visitor Center overlook
- Donated funds for a portable LCD projector for refuge off-site programs
- Completed a new sales wall in the bookstore
- Matching funds provided to refuge to purchase a broadcast seeder for prairie restoration
- Sponsored the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds event
- Received $4,998 grant from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for Capacity Building
- Added new videos to the movie collection so the refuge could host weekly nature films
- Purchased Insect Swoop nets and several other tools for youth programs
- Donated funds to refuge for restoration: Mud Lake, Evans Lake, Visitor Center
- Initiated an Oral History Project that will focus on the historic land uses of the refuge

- Ski trail groomer and snow machine
- Spotting scope for persons with disabilities by Visitor Center and new observation platform
- Contract lawn and garden maintenance around Visitor Center
- Intern scholarships
- Portable microphone for use in Visitor Center amphitheater
- Stipend for housing at local campground/resort for summer interns
- Small observation deck at Balsam Lake
- Interpretive signs for Old Indian Hiking Trail, Auto tour, and for plant identification signs at Visitor Center.
- Binoculars for interpretive programs
- Butterfly garden
- Waterfowl observation blind
- Snow shoes for winter programs
- Hiking trail resurfacing material
- Bluebird boxes
Direct property donations are also tax deductable. If you have an item or material that you would like to donate, please contact us.
Relatively new computer equipment needed.
TIA will be seeking donated computers no more than about three to four years old for use in the visitor center to aid in the education and interpretation program, as well as expanded volunteer participation in the material for our website.
