Auto Tour Stop #5: Water, Rice and History. Stands of wild rice, a staple for waterfowl and man for centuries, can be found along the edges and shallower parts of Blackbird Lake. Look for it in the "floating leaf" stage in June. In July the stalks will be upright and by August the seed heads will be formed. Later in the month and into early September, members of the White Earth Band of Anishinaabe will be poling their canoes through the beds, harvesting the crop.
