Auto Tour Stop #10: Loons . Pine Lake is a good place to watch for our Minnesota state bird, the common loon. Returning in April and May, the birds begin searching for nest sites immediately. Following a month-long incubation period chicks emerge and when small are often carried on the parents' backs for protection against predators such as snapping turtles, northern pike and bald eagles. By late August and September most birds leave the refuge for staging areas on larger lakes before migrating to their wintering areas along the gulf coast.
