19th Annual Festival of Birds

As spring finally begins to settle into the Detroit Lakes area, birders from all over the U.S. and Canada are making final preparations to converge on the community for the 19th annual Festival of Birds.

The 2016 incarnation of the spring birding extravaganza is set to take place on May 19-21. For the second year in a row, the Detroit Mountain Recreation Area will serve as festival headquarters.

Speakers and workshop presenters scheduled to appear include Doug Buri, Carrol Henderson, Dr. Joshua Stafford, Joe Hautman, Judd Brink and Scott Weidensaul (details below).

Each of the seven scheduled field trips will be guided by expert birders who will do their best to ensure that participants see as many different species as possible during their half-day excursion.

“Our field trips go to the ‘hot spots’ for viewing a huge variety of birds,” says festival committee member Kelly Blackledge, who is also the visitor services manager at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. “They’re designed for not only bird watchers, but photographers too.”
