Blackbird Auto Tour

Welcome to Tamarac National Wildlife Reguge and the 5-miles Blackbird Auto Tour. The drive is open May through November; weather and road conditions permitting. Numbered stops along the route are keyed to notes that will help explain wildlife mangement practices, interesting habitats and history.

The drive is one-way through through stop #8. The road is then open to two-way traffic. Early morning and evening hours offer best opportunities for viewing wildlife. During the afternoon, many species become inactive, especially during the summer months.

Binoculars and spotting scopes are recommended. They will help you get a better view without getting too close and disturbing wildlife.

Drive slowly and watch for movement. Use you ears as well as your eyes. Your vehicle makes a good blind, so stay in it when viewing wildlife. If you hike, do so quietly.

Insect repellent is recommended during summer months. Poison ivy is present throughout the refuge, so we suggest you learn to identify it and stay clear.

Please share your wildlife sightings with refuge staff at the visitor center. You can also email them to: tamarac@fws.gov
