Painted Turtles Hatching

turtles-hatching
Researcher Tim Mitchel returned to retrieve temperature loggers in the turtle nests he marked this spring. He will be determining the sex ratio after hatching as part of a climate change study. Painted turtles are temperature dependent for sex determination. Warmer temps create more females, cooler temps create more males. Painted turtles will be hatching in a few weeks, but will remain underground and hibernate in nest until spring.
